Making a Turkish Kite at OKR, Jan. 8-11, 2009
As soon as I saw that Dave Ellis was teaching a kite designed by a Turkish kitemaker, Halit Cebeci, I was ecstatic, transported back 50 yearsto my youth when I worked at the American Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. The OctoPyro kite was designed by Halit and somehow appeared in the Kitebuilder’s Forum where Dave picked it up, modified it and began talking to Halit, seeking permission to adapt his kite, an octagon shape with long, flowing tales.
For years, I had been experimenting with long tales attached by velcro on my snake-headed kites, using fiberglass for the leading edge spar. But somehow, I never seemed to find the right balance between lift of the sail and the drag of the tails. They often crashed wildly on the field.
Dave’s modifications of Halit’s kite with the octagon shape and flowing flowered organza tails was just right. Eureka! I am always amazed as a kitebuilder when something clicks that you’ve been struggling with.
The hardest and most tedious part of sewing this kite, was putting the edgebinding on the 30 foot tails. But as we are inclined to do at OKR, long hours into the night or early in the morning means I can achieve my workshop goal of finishing the kite, with special thanks to all the encouraging kitemakers at OKR.
Dave was able to give me Halit’s E-Mail address, so I immediately wrote him in Turkish to thank him for his kite which I will cherish as one of my favorite kites in the sky. Halit has an 11-year old daughter, the same age as my granddaughter. Perhaps one of these days, we will be able to meet and fly together. For me, the beauty of the international flavor of this hobby is the serendipitous friends we make.

Rüzgarın estiği her zaman, uçurtma zamanıdır.
